Elevation changes temperature
Air temperature generally decreases with height, although the exact rate varies with the atmosphere. Our Troodos point is near 1,700 metres, so it can be substantially cooler than the coast and Nicosia.
Cooler air does not imply weak UV. At elevation, UV may remain strong, so check the index rather than relying on comfort.
Terrain changes wind and cloud
Ridges accelerate or redirect wind, while sheltered valleys can behave differently. Rising air can also form cloud and precipitation on one side of the range while another part of the island remains clear.
A single point cannot capture every trail or summit. The forecast point is disclosed so hikers can judge whether it represents their destination.
Plan for the mountain, not the beach
Carry layers, water and suitable footwear, and check official warnings before departure. In winter, rapidly changing visibility, wind, ice or snow can create conditions that a simple temperature card cannot communicate.
